Art Competition Launched to Mark International Mountain Day

To mark this important day, CHIESA has launched an art competition for selected primary and secondary schools along its research transect in the Taita Hills, Kenya and Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. The competition aims to enhance understanding and raise awareness of young people on the importance of mountains for our life.

International Mountain Day is observed annually around the world on 11th December.

Environmental education through creative expression

Students in Primary and secondary Schools are invited to submit artwork reflecting CHIESA’s theme this year ‘My Mountain, My Home’. Artistic expression is highly encouraged, although with emphasis on the importance of mountains to the environment, livelihoods, recreation, health and food.

Forty submissions from every school will be showcased at CHIESA’s International Mountain Day celebrations slated for Wednesday 11 December, 2013, in Moshi, Tanzania. The top four artworks from each school will be announced, and their creators will receive a certificate of merit. All participating schools will also receive certificates.

Further, the winning artworks will be exhibited in three European universities (University of York, United Kingdom; University of Malta, Malta and University of Helsinki, Finland) as part of CHIESA’s commitment to environmental education. The European exhibitions will run between May and August 2014.

Art for trees

In anticipation of huge volumes of art submissions, CHIESA will ensure that everyone’s a winner!

All artwork that will not have been selected in the top four will be auctioned off at a later date, and proceeds used to purchase indigenous tree saplings for planting at participating schools. CHIESA will involve students and teachers from selected schools in the tree planting ceremonies, and incorporate awareness creation on the role of forests in carbon sequestration, provision of habitats for various species and sustenance of important ecosystem services.

The International Mountain Day Art Competition will close by Tuesday 26 November, 2013, in both countries.

Other activities

Aside from the art competition, CHIESA Project has several other activities lined up in the days preceding the International Mountain Day, and after. These activities will take place in Moshi, Tanzania, along the Mount Kilimanjaro research transect.

A workshop for local farmers on domestic use of firewood and resulting carbon emissions will be held on Tuesday 10 December, while on Wednesday 11, the CHIESA Project will launch development of an action plan for Integrated Water Resources Management in the Miwaleni Springs. Located in the Ruvu river sub-catchment of Pangani basin, the Miwaleni Springs contribute substantially to the Nyumba ya Mungu Reservoir water volume, thus measures must be put in place to protect this valuable water resource. While the springs still manage to maintain a near constant flow to the Nyumba ya Mungu Dam even when rainfall is scarce, an increasing demand for water and other resources in the area could cause harmful long term effects to the environment. In collaboration with the University of Dar es Salaam, the CHIESA project will host stakeholders at the Lutheran Uhuru Hotel in Moshi to discuss development of the action plan.

The stakeholder meeting will give way to a three day three-day training course for Tanzanian journalists on Climate Change Reporting starting on Thursday 12 to 15 December. The media workshop aims at demystifying the concepts, drivers and predicted outcomes of climate change, and building the capacity of journalists to address and communicate the phenomenon.
